CNN —Colon cancer may seem like a distant concern for some, but with the growing trend of younger people being diagnosed, staying informed and proactive is crucial. I lost a dear friend — a doctor, father and husband, just like myself — to colon cancer in 2017. CNN —Prostate cancer remains a significant concern in my practice, which is why I emphasize the importance of early detection. The American Cancer Society estimates there will be nearly 300,000 new cases of prostate cancer and about 35,000 deaths in 2024. When combined with other diagnostic tests and clinical assessments, it aids in identifying prostate cancer in its early stages, when treatment outcomes for prostate cancer surgery and radiation have the best odds for cure. "People might say, 'I want to age in place as the default plan, because that's what I'm already doing,'" said Carol Chiang, CEO of Evolving Homes, a company providing personalized consulting for individuals and families who want to age in place. The costs of the upgrades necessary to age in place can vary, experts say. Chiang said she has seen the prices of bathroom upgrades vary within Florida, where her practice is based. Humans get overwhelmed by too many options, a behavioral finance concept known as "choice overload." How investors encounter choice overloadChristopher Ames | E+ | Getty ImagesIt's not just investing: The choice paradox can extend to things like ice cream flavors and apparel, for example. Given these behavioral biases, retailers and others have evolved, making it less likely consumers will experience choice overload "in the wild" today, said Dan Egan, vice president of behavioral finance and investing at Betterment. Do-it-yourselfers may have about one to two dozen investment options, at most, from which to choose, reducing the choice friction. If you don't give people an easy choice, "it's really hard for them," Blanchett said.

They said that over 200TWh of batteries will be required for the energy transition both in electric vehicles and energy storage. That breakthrough could arrive by 2027 with the commercialization of SSB batteries, Bernstein said. The firm added that they are set to have higher energy density, fast-charging capabilities and be "much safer" than liquid batteries. Batteries with higher energy density are required to reduce battery costs and increase the range of electric vehicles, Bernstein said. The asset management firm said established battery makers are likely to be the winners.

"They're crazy," said IRA expert and certified public accountant Ed Slott, describing the new RMD rules. For 2023, RMDs apply to both pretax and Roth 401(k) accounts, along with other workplace plans. Secure 2.0 bumped the RMD beginning age to 73 from 72 for pretax IRA owners and retirement plan participants. If you turn age 72 in 2023, you can delay RMDs until age 73. But if you turned 72 in 2022, you needed to take your 2022 RMD by April 1, 2023, and your 2023 RMD by year-end.

PremiumsFrederic Cirou | Photoalto | Getty ImagesThe premium is the sum you pay an insurer each month to participate in a health plan. It's perhaps the most transparent and easy-to-understand cost component of a health plan — the equivalent of a sticker price. The average co-insurance rate for consumers is 19% for primary care and 20% for specialty care, according to KFF data. For example, would you struggle to pay a $1,000 medical bill if you require health care? If so, a health plan with a larger monthly premium and a smaller deductible may be your best bet, Sun said.

"The UAW is holding the deal hostage over battery plants," said Ford Chief Executive Jim Farley on Sept. 29. Since then, the union has not announced an agreement on battery plant issues with GM or the other automakers. Stellantis and Samsung SDI (006400.KS) have announced plans to build two EV battery plants in Kokomo, Indiana, employing up to 2,800 workers in total. Ford officials have not disclosed details of their proposals for battery plant wages or unionization. Stellantis and SDI said their second joint battery factory in Indiana is scheduled to open in 2027, and could employ 1,400 workers. The two companies would have a combined annual production capacity of 67 gigawatt hours (GWh) at the Indiana production site, Samsung SDI said in a statement. The first joint plant is set to start production in the first quarter of 2025. For Stellantis, a second U.S. battery plant would help the company comply with U.S. Inflation Reduction Act domestic content rules that govern federal EV subsidies. DETROIT — Samsung SDI and automaker Stellantis plan to invest more than $3.2 billion in a new electric vehicle battery plant in Kokomo, Indiana. The facility — Stellantis' sixth battery plant announced globally — was largely expected, but the location and timing are notable. Battery plants have become a main issue in the labor talks, as the UAW views EV battery jobs as crucial to its long-term viability. General Motors last week agreed to include workers at its EV battery plant in the company's national contract with the union, which Fain called a "transformative win." Fain said the union expects Stellantis and Ford Motor to follow suit, including battery plant workers in eventual contract agreements.

"Our strike is working, but we’re not there yet," UAW President Shawn Fain said in a livestreamed update on negotiations with the three automakers. Threatening to strike against GM's Arlington, Texas, plant that makes cash-cow SUVs like the Cadillac Escalade spurred GM to agree that EV battery factories would become union plants with UAW contracts, Fain said. GM is building three Ultium joint-venture battery plants with South Korea's LG Energy Solution (373220.KS). GM is building a fourth U.S. battery plant with Samsung SDI (006400.KS) in Indiana. Fain also said on Friday that the UAW could still strike against highly profitable pickup truck plants if progress stalls.

Two Black women crossed state lines to give birth since they lived in places with low healthcare ratings. AdvertisementAdvertisementFor Black women, both nationally and in Texas, those rates are disproportionately higher. To avoid becoming another statistic, more and more Black women are opting for home births, doulas, midwives, and birth assistants. Due to the high maternal mortality rate in the US, some Black women are turning to midwives. Perritt warned that crossing state lines, even for those who can afford it, will not address the Black maternal mortality crisis.

But according to some industry experts, it’s not too early to start thinking about – and perhaps even booking – next year’s trip. But Keyes generally advises travelers not to necessarily hit that purchase button as soon as an airline opens up a flight for booking. “While it’s relatively common knowledge that last-minute fares are expensive, what’s far less known is that it’s also possible to book flights too early,” he says. From the hospitality industry perspective, advance booking can help hoteliers and other businesses adjust staffing, pricing and other factors to offer a better experience. While Cabutti of JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa acknowledges that “the early booking trend results in higher room rates,” it also enables businesses to better meet guests’ needs.

Pandemic offered a 'trial run' for free meals"The pandemic was a trial run and it worked," Crystal FitzSimons, FRAC's director of school and out-of-school time programs, said of the universal free school meals. Inflationary pressures have since pushed up prices in many school districts, which have contended with higher costs for food and labor, said Diane Pratt-Heavner, a spokeswoman for the School Nutrition Association. Since local school districts set their own prices, they can "vary widely" across the country, the School Nutrition Association said. Loss of free meals may lead to hardshipIn 2021, the National School Lunch Program provided 2.2 billion meals, about 99% of which were at a free or reduced price, according to USDA data. Kids from "food-insecure and marginally food-secure" households are more likely to eat school meals, according to the USDA.
